Fall 2008 production: Dial "M" for Murder

The O’Fallon Repertory Theatre presents Frederick Knott’s Dial “M” for Murder this fall at the auditorium in O’Fallon Municipal Centre.  The play runs Friday through Sunday for two weekends: October 24 – 26, and October 31 – November 2, 2008.  Curtain is 8:00 pm Fridays and Saturdays and 2:00 pm on Sundays.  The box office will open one hour before.

Tickets go on sale Monday, September 22 at the Parks and Recreation Office (400 Civic Park Drive) and the Renaud Spirit Center (2650 Tri Sports Circle).  Tickets are also available by phone using Visa or MasterCard.  Please call (636) 379-5606 or (636) 474-2REC.

Dial “M” for Murder will be presented “in-the-round.”  It is staged by New York City director and choreographer Norb Joerder.  Assistant Director is St. Louis native Garrett Liam States, a world-touring concert vocalist, actor, and owner of Concerts International Vocal and Acting Studio in Kirkwood.

Tony Wendice has married his wife, Margot, for her money and now plans to murder her for the same reason.  He arranges the perfect murder.  He blackmails a scoundrel he used to know into strangling Margot for a fee of one thousand pounds, and arranges a brilliant alibi for himself.  Unfortunately, the murderer gets murdered and the victim survives.  But this doesn’t discourage the husband: he sees his hireling’s death as an opportunity to have his wife convicted for the murder of the man who tried to murder her.  Unfortunately for Tony, a shrewd inspector from Scotland Yard and a young man who is in love with the wife just may discover the real criminal behind it all…

The New York Herald Tribune called Dial “M” for Murder “a holiday for whodunit fans, and, as such, it couldn’t be more welcome.”

Dial “M” for Murder was first presented on the stage by James P. Sherwood at the Westminster Theatre in London on June 19, 1952, and was directed by John Fernald.  It made its American debut on October 29 of that year at the Plymouth Theatre in New York City.  That production was presented by James P. Sherwood and staged by Reginald Denham.  In 1954, Alfred Hitchcock adapted Dial “M” for Murder for the big screen.  It starred Ray Milland, Grace Kelly and Robert Cummings (a Joplin, Missouri native).

Dial “M” for Murder is produced by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc.
